Companies Registry CR
Who they are
The Companies Registry of Hong Kong (CR) is a specialized government department of Hong Kong that falls under the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. CR serves as Hong Kong's principal registrar and regulator, with responsibilities that include incorporating companies in Hong Kong and registering companies incorporated elsewhere. Other than functioning as an organization that registers companies, the Companies Registry acts as the main portal towards achieving financial transparency via the licensing system of the Money Lenders and TCSPs to ensure stringent compliance with the anti-money laundering requirements. Through its digitized infrastructure, the Companies Registry controls the official depository of corporate disclosures in one of the leading financial hubs of the world.
What they do
The Hong Kong Companies Registry oversees the entire life cycle of a corporation by incorporating companies locally and registering foreign companies for legal recognition in the jurisdiction. Transparency of the corporations is ensured through the collection, validation, and archiving of statutory reports such as annual returns, financial statements, and changes to directors or capital, which are made publicly available through the e-Services Portal. Apart from being involved in the registration process, the department also acts as an important regulator of Money Lenders and TCSPs, ensuring that these companies adhere to strict AML and counter-terrorist financing regulations. Apart from overseeing these processes, the Registry also engages in prosecuting corporate bodies that fail to file their statutory reports on time and also ensures data exchange across borders to maintain regulatory integrity in the Hong Kong financial market environment.
