Who they are

The Qatar Financial Information Unit (QFIU) is the specialized and central national organization that provides financial intelligence for the State of Qatar. Established in 2004 and given legal support through Law No. 20 of 2019, the unit is a semi-independent entity that has a physical presence inside the Qatar Central Bank in Doha. Directed by the Head of the QFIU, Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad bin Mubarak Al Thani, the organization acts as the only national hub for identifying financial crimes in the country. It is the representative of Qatar in the international environment as a member of the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units, which ensures that the country's intelligence shares data across borders according to the global standards of financial integrity.

What they do

Qatar Financial Information Unit (QFIU) serves as the central national body that receives, analyzes, and distributes financial intelligence regarding money laundering, terrorist financing, and predicate offenses [Law No. 20 of 2019]. QFIU serves as the single window agency for receiving and distributing STRs and threshold reports from all commercial banks, insurance companies, exchange houses, and DNFBPs operating in mainland Qatar and the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC). Using the support of data analysis software, QFIU traces the flow of dirty money, looks into proliferation finance routes, and develops strategic financial intelligence packages. Upon confirmation of any financial threat or illicit financial activity, the financial intelligence gathered by QFIU is discreetly distributed to judicial and law enforcement agencies like the Public Prosecution and the Ministry of Interior for asset freeze and prosecution purposes. Internationally, QFIU works with its counterparts in different parts of the world through the Egmont Group for combating international financial crimes and FATF standards.
