India's external debt rises to $778.2 billion at June 2026

Reserve Bank of India issued the Quarterly Report on External Debt as of the end of June 2026. The total external debt of India has increased to $778.2 billion, up by $15.4 billion. The external debt-to-GDP ratio has decreased to 20.8%. Long-term debt has increased to $624.7 billion, while the short-term debt ratio has been slightly higher than long-term debt and has come to 19.7% of total external debt. US Dollar constituted the largest share of debt, at 54.8%. Non-financial corporations contributed the largest share to total debt, at 36.1%, followed by deposit-taking corporations at 26.2%.

Why it matters

This is a routine macroeconomic and balance-of-payments release with no enforcement or regulatory compliance issues. Although the indicators on external debt contribute to systemic risk analysis, there are no actions by the regulators in the document itself.
