Data Protection Commission DPC
Who they are
Data Protection Commission (DPC) is the independent national supervisory authority with the responsibility of safeguarding the human right to privacy and data protection within the Republic of Ireland. As a regulatory authority established by the Data Protection Act 2018, the DPC is the main watchdog authority for GDPR and all other data protection acts at the national level. More importantly, the role of the DPC is even more significant considering that Ireland is the European hub for the world’s leading tech giants such as Meta, Google, and TikTok, making the DPC the Lead Supervisory Authority for the EEA region.
What they do
The Data Protection Commission (DPC) oversees, investigates, and regulates compliance with data privacy in all enterprises and public authorities doing business in Ireland. The body takes up individual cases of data privacy infringement, conducts detailed audits, and investigates cross-border large-scale data breach cases among corporate enterprises through the EU “One-Stop-Shop” process. The DPC enjoys immense legal powers to impose enforcement notices, compel businesses to stop any illegal data processing, and impose multi-million euro penalties on multinationals breaching the GDPR or local privacy laws. Moreover, the DPC provides guidance on compliance matters to firms, spreads awareness regarding data security, and assesses privacy concerns related to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, as per the Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Act 2026.
