The APRA is an independent statutory authority set up in 1998 as a result of the restructuring of Australia's regulatory structure. In contrast to the conduct regulator, its mandate is focused on prudential regulation.
What they do
Regulates authorised deposit-taking institutions, insurers and superannuation licensees; implements capital adequacy, liquidity, corporate governance, risk management, operational resilience, cybersecurity and remuneration standards; performs supervision and stress testing; gathers prudential information; makes license conditions and directions; and takes enforcement actions or resolution actions as a result of risks to financial safety.
