Who they are

The Data Protection Office is an autonomous regulatory body in the Republic of Mauritius that has the responsibility of ensuring that information privacy and the right to protect personal data are maintained. This autonomous body operates under the statutory legal jurisdiction of the Data Protection Office portal and under the provisions of the national privacy laws. It is headed by the Data Protection Commissioner, who works to ensure that privacy rights are not breached by either government agencies or by private sector organizations.

What they do

The Data Protection Office manages data protection and privacy in Mauritius by regulating and enforcing the implementation of local data privacy laws and international standards. The office undertakes the registration of local data controllers and processors, audits organizations’ data practices, and investigates any reported security breaches and complaints from the general public. Besides this, the Data Protection Office issues guidance to organizations to fulfill their legal responsibilities and ensures that individuals can effectively enforce their right to access or rectify their data.
