Who they are

Directorate of Enforcement is a multidisciplinary law enforcement agency working within the ambit of the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. It deals with complex cases of financial crimes like money laundering, financial transactions across borders, proceeds of crime, violation of foreign exchange laws, and economic crimes. The Directorate of Enforcement collaborates with FIU-IND, RBI, SEBI, CBI, DRI, Income Tax Department, State Police, and Interpol.


What they do

Conducts investigations into violations of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA), including tracing, attachment, seizure, confiscation, and prosecution of the proceeds of crime. Conducts investigations into violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA) about foreign exchange operations, overseas investment, and remittance activities. Deals with the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, 2018 (FEOA), which seeks to identify, attach, and seize property belonging to fugitive economic offenders evading Indian jurisdiction. Dealing with assets which have been derived through criminal activities. Works in coordination with FIU-IND, RBI, SEBI, IRDAI, PFRDA, IFSCA, CBIC, CBDT, DRI, CBI, NIA, State Police and foreign counterparts for investigations into financial crimes. Undertakes MLAT requests, Letters Rogatory, financial investigations in relation to extradition, and cross-border recovery of assets. Filing of complaints of prosecution before special courts set up under the PMLA and representation of the Government in proceedings.
